Why SMART-BIT®?

When choosing a HEADCOTE® color it is important to consider the following.

1. The natural variation of any wood type in both grain and color.
2. How you will prepare and maintain your deck.
3. The effects of weathering.

• The fact that there is a natural variation in any single type of wood, from tree to tree and board to board is something that should be understood. When selecting and accepting your decking material, check for radical variations but also understand that some variation is not only acceptable, but also visually desirable. Try matching a HEADCOTE® color with several boards before making a final selection.
• How you coat and maintain your deck should influence your HEADCOTE® color decision. Deck stains are applied to protect wood from the affects of weathering. Depending upon the stain selected the natural color of your deck wood can be maintained or modified. Periodic washings and reapplications of stain to your deck are needed to maintain the desired appearance. Choose the HEADCOTE® color that best blends with a finished or stained sample.
• Decks that are not stained and are not coated with protective finishes will succumb to weathering and fade or change color depending on the specific material. In this case, it is best to choose the HEADCOTE® color that will best blend with the “weathered” decking.
